Our health and wellbeing as adults depend very much on the lifestyles we adopt as adolescents. Recent statistics provided by the Association of Young People's Health show that physical activity declines during adolescence. Doing regular exercise to keep fit is something everyone should do. It strengthens our cardiovascular and muscular systems. It has a positive impact on the brain and improves cognition, mood, attention and academic achievement in students. It builds strong bones and muscles, controls weight, reduces symptoms of anxiety and depression. Regular exercise should also reduce the risk of developing health conditions such as heart disease. Nutrition is important. Most young people do not eat fruit and vegetables every day. One teenager in eight drinks sugary carbonated drinks, and 7% consume energy drinks, at least five times a week. Poor nutrition is connected to obesity: in the UK about one in five school pupils aged 11-15 is obese. We should consume more fruit and vegetables and eat less junk food. And we shouldn't drink sugary carbonated drinks. We should eat less fat and red meat and drink more water. Fat protects our vital internal organs, but too much fat and cholesterol can lead to heart disease and diabetes. About 60% of our body is water, and drinking water is vital to maintain good health. We should drink about two litres a day to replace the water the body loses. Fortunately rates of smoking, drinking and drug use in the 11-15 age group has fallen in recent years. These substances often cause headaches and stomach aches, and may lead to more serious illnesses in later life. No one under 22 should drink alcohol. Teenagers cannot metabolise it correctly. It just circulates in their bodies, damaging their organs. One in four secondary school pupils say they do not get sufficient sleep to concentrate at school. Managing media and communications activities may be part of the problem. The excessive and obsessive use of digital devices by teenagers is creating addiction, just like a drug.
