A Quick-Thinking(nota1)
Hero
Jeremy W. is thirteen years old and lives in the United States. Every morning he catches the school bus to get to his local middle school.
One morning, he was travelling on the school bus as usual with other students from his school. Suddenly, the driver(nota2)
lost consciousness. He lost control of the bus and it swerved(nota3)
along the road. Jeremy shouted for someone on the bus to phone 911, the emergency services number. He jumped out of his seat and grabbed(nota4)
the steering wheel(nota5)
. He steered(nota6)
the bus over to the side of the road and pulled the key out of the ignition(nota7)
. The bus stopped and Jeremy opened the doors so the other students could get off the bus.
Someone was driving behind the bus. When Jeremy stopped the bus they got on the bus and tried to help the driver. When the police arrived they found everything was under control. Emergency services took the bus driver to hospital. Later they told the school that the bus driver had had a heart attack.
Jeremy said everything happened very quickly. He just acted on instinct. It was pretty scary(nota8)
but they all kept calm. It wasn't like in the movies when everyone screams and panics. His quick thinking brought the school bus and 15 other students to safety(nota9)
.
Students at Jeremy's school regularly receive training in emergency situations on the school bus, including how to stop the bus in an emergency. Jeremy was able to remember his training(nota10)
and put it to good use. Jeremy was the hero of the day.
